I recently had the chance to talk to Sam Feeney, a career coach and consultant. He helps people either improve their career satisfaction in their current job, or help them find one that will satisfy them. He also helps employers understand what motivates their employees to ensure people stay there and stay happy.
It reminded me of a moment I had a few months ago, where I asked myself that exact question:
“Am I in the wrong job?”
The truth is, I had a gut-wrenching moment a couple of months ago, and at least half of it was my own stupidity that got me there.
One week, I resigned from my position in a partnership LLC that delivers most of the same products and services that I do now. That lowered my workload and the predictability of my job for the future. The next week, the client from my biggest project told me they needed to pause.
I went from, “I’m making a decent amount of money here,” to, “Boy, I hope I can pay the bills next month.” It was awesome.
I mean that, by the way. It really was awesome, because it gave me clarity. When everything slowed down, I got the chance to take a step back from my situation and really think.
Was I in the right line of work for me? Am I cut out to be a full-time writer and ghostwriter?
I got to talk about it with my wife. I got to pray about it. I examined my skills, motivations, and dreams. I took a look at the budget and the fact that we were about to get a puppy.
(He’s like seven times bigger than that already).
Eventually, I came up with an answer to the question.
Yes. I’m in the right job. This is where I want to be, and this is where I should be. It’s difficult and unpredictable at the moment, but I would rather fail at this than succeed at something else. So, I’m going to invest my all into this.
That’s why you’ve seen me start a podcast, and post consistently on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. That’s why I’m beginning this Substack publication and hitting the “monetize” button way sooner than some think I should. I’m doing it scared. I want this, and I’m going to put my heart and soul into it and see where it takes me.
And you’re invited for the journey.
If you want to help me make my dreams come true, then share this post and invite people to become a free subscriber. This publication will entertain and educate, and I will do my best to speak to every reader’s joy-filled, starry-eyed inner child.
